H’COLA’s 2012 celebration of African-American History Month kicks off on
Friday, February 4th and concludes Monday, February 28th.  In between those
two dates are several wonderful events in honor of the rich heritage of
Apalachicola’s African-Americans, as well as those throughout the nation.

H’COLA’s flagship event is the Annual African-American History Festival, which
takes place each year on the 3rd weekend in February.  The three-day festival,
held at Franklin Square, which is located in the North Historic District, in the
heart of “The Hill” off the corner of 6th Street and Avenue L, celebrates and
highlights both local and national African-American history, food, art and
culture.

This year, the celebration kicks off on Friday with the Grand Opening of the
Historic Holy Family Center as a Senior Citizen Center, followed by The 1st
Legend's Ball, also held at the Center.  On Saturday, the day begins with a
pulsating parade that leads to historic Franklin Square, where the festival’s
opening ceremony opens up a day filled with live entertainment, exhibits, food,
arts and crafts, informational, educational, and service booths.
Coupled with inspirational speakers, music, dance, poetry, drama – you name it, H’COLA’s African-American History Festival offers a wonderful, day
for the entire family’s enjoyment, and every age group, from pre-school to senior citizen will have a fabulous time!

Through the support of local businesses, grants, partnerships, in-kind support, hard work, and dedication, admission for the festival is FREE!
Representatives from H’COLA approached the Apalachicola Board of City Commissioners at their January 2012 meeting, requesting the city partner
with them in observing February as African-American History Month, as was done in 2011 and the city commission again, wholeheartedly, endorsed
their request with their agreement and full support.

The following is a schedule of events that have been tentatively planned throughout the city involving a combination of public organizations and
businesses.
